Dentures are an excellent way to replace missing teeth and give you back the ability to eat, talk, and smile with ease. If you’ve recently received dentures, you’re probably wondering how you can best maintain them to ensure they last for years to come.

Here are Parkside Family Dental’s tips on how to make your new dentures feel comfortable and last for as long as they can!

1. Remove Your Dentures When You Sleep

If you have removable dentures, it’s important to remove your dentures at night, every night. This allows your gums to rest at night, not to mention night is the perfect time to soak your dentures in a cleaning solution to keep them in great shape.

2. Keep Your Dentures Wet If You’re Removing Them

Dentures are designed to be in saliva for long periods of time. To maintain the integrity of your dentures, soak them in water any time you’re not wearing them. When dentures dry out, they can become warped which can alter the way they fit in your mouth.

3. Don’t Clean Your Dentures with Hot Water

Cleaning your dentures every day can keep them in good shape, but be careful what temperature water you’re using to clean them. Hot water can change the shape of your dentures and they may not be able to fit in your mouth afterwards. Instead, use cold or lukewarm water to clean your dentures.

4. Don’t Chew on Non-Food Objects

You should avoid super tough food as much as possible when you are wearing your dentures. You should also avoid chewing down on non-food objects, like pen caps or wrappers, in order to preserve the integrity of your dentures.

5. Check for Changes in Fit

Over time, your dentures might not fit like they used to. Ill-fitting dentures can be abrasive on your gums, not to mention will not serve your needs well.
