Dental Implants: Myths & Facts

Dental implants have changed the game when it comes to replacing missing teeth. While this modern dental procedure has helped countless people reclaim beautiful, full smiles, there are still plenty of myths swirling around out there about it. We wanted to set the record straight by separating fact from fiction. In this blog post, we decided to tackle the most common myths out there about dental implants.

Myth: Getting a Dental Implant Is Painful

Since getting a dental implant involves surgery, many people worry or assume that it’s a painful procedure. This is not the case! First off, the proper anesthesia and sedation is provided during the procedure so that the patient doesn’t experience any pain. Rather than pain, what you might feel is some slight pressure. After the procedure is complete, there may be some tenderness or slight discomfort but this is easily managed with over-the-counter pain medication.

Myth: A Dental Implant Requires Special Maintenance

One of the advantages of a dental implant is that it doesn’t require any special care. You can simply brush and floss it like you would any of your other teeth. Unlike with some removable bridges or dentures, there’s no need to buy any special tools or materials to keep your dental implant clean.

Myth: The Dental Implant Procedure Is Risky

In general, dental implants have an extremely high success rate at around 95% to 98%. Before you’re even at the actual stage of getting a dental implant, there will be sufficient consultations, exams, and planning beforehand to ensure your treatment is successful. That’s why it’s so important to visit a trustworthy doctor who will properly assess your case, and make sure your dental health is in good shape before even recommending the procedure to you.
